This is a review for the entire Darren Shan saga Total score: 4 I look back on The Saga of Darren Shan with fondness. While some parts were stronger than others, overall I really enjoyed the series. It was thrilling, exhilarating and exciting. It was gross and disturbing. Some parts were very predictable, other parts left me utterly baffled. Add all of that together, and you have the perfect recipe for a scary story for both children and adults. Darren Shan is a fascinating writer. Story The story starts with Darren Shan, a boy around 12-13, who visits a freak show with his best friend, Steve. From that evening on, both their lives will never be the same again. We follow Darren as he becomes the assistant of a vampire, Mr Crepsley, becomes a half-vampire himself, and all the consequences of these happenings. We journey along with them to Vampire Mountain, where all the important vampires live, including the Vampire Princes. We make friends with very eccentric people, we anxiously bite our nails and we cannot put the book down. Characters No two characters are the same, which in itself is quite a feat. Darren Shan is a nice protagonist to follow around for twelve stories. He doesn’t have the most exciting personality, but he doesn’t annoy me either. I like that the antagonists get the more interesting characters. The story revolves mainly around Darren, but the others play an important part as well. Mr Crepsley would have been a great father. He is strict and proud, but he’s always honest (as are all the vampires and vampaneze) and he’ll give you a pat on the back if you’ve done well. Despite his sombreness, he does make you smile. Just like his previous teacher, Seba Nile, Larten Crepsley makes a wonderful role-model of whom you can be proud. Vancha March is made of awesome. He doesn’t live as strictly by the rules as all the other vampires. He doesn’t use any weapons except his hands and a handful of throwing stars (“shurikens”). He has green hair, wears purple clothes and even though he is described as an ugly man, he thinks he’s quite the ladies’ man. If anything in this saga makes you laugh, it’s this guy. He stole the show. I could go on and on, because every character has its interesting traits. Harkat, Mr Tall and Mr Tiny, Evanna the Witch (but don’t call her that or her frogs will kill you), Vanez... each character has their own defining characteristics. Romance The romance was.. eh. It was okay when Darren and Debbie were both 13, but then Debbie became an adult and Darren was stuck being a teenager and then it bordered on creepy. Even if, after 30 years, Darren eventually does become an adult, it's still very creepy. Luckily, the romance didn't play a big part in the story. It was all about Darren's destiny and the fight between the vampires and the vampaneze. The romance was just a background story. More important was the friendship between Darren and Harkat(view spoiler)[/Kurda (hide spoiler)], Mr Crepsley and the other characters. Ending While I was left with many questions ('What exactly is Desmond Tiny?' 'What happened to the others?' 'Seriously, what the fuck is Mr Tiny?'), the ending left me satisfied. There is a happy ending in a way (view spoiler)[despite the fact that our main character died, but that's a nice change compared to all the other books I've read. I'm a little confused by the whole thing where a different person will replace Darren in the entire story, but that's okay. We're not supposed to understand Mr Tiny and his people. (hide spoiler)] Conclusion I will definitely be holding on to these books and re-read them in the future. Maybe then some things will become clearer. If not, it will still be a fantastic story.

Alright. So maybe since I'm older this time, I understand the ending better, so I'm not as disappointed this time. It felt a lot like a cop-out to me back when I read it in 2006, but I understand now what Shan tried to accomplish with his ending.I still would have liked a different way of resolving the plot, but it was also a nice change from the usual.So, while I can appreciate the ending more now that I'm older, I still firmly believe that this series is meant for younger readers and as such

this entire series fucked me up as a kid and fucks me up now. in fact i'm almost certain it made me into the angst and tragedy lover i am todaysometimes i read a book when i'm young and love it, and then i'm afraid to reread it when i'm older because i might tarnish the memory. but in this case kid me had pretty good taste. and i don't even like vampires.tbh, i'm not even sure how many times i reread some of these books when i was younger. how many tears have i shed over these characters??? a

I finally finished this series after starting it for the first time many-many years ago...I had moments of anger when Darren acted stupidly or made really naive decisions and yet I kept reading it...And you know what? I am really happy that I did because for me the ending was perfect! ☺It concluded in a very logical way and it was bittersweet but at the same time hopeful and nice! Well done! 🙂

Forgot how much I used to love this series and author. It was a very pleasant and thrilling read of a childhood favourite.

I love series that go full circle, this one was a little word. Sort of like a mind fuck in the end of it. Where things sort of make sense, but only if you don't spend too much time considering all the things that are wrong with what's going on and why the universe shouldn't work that way.
